On October 16, join us to celebrate the thriving local SF art community, at Space Gallery for "F*ck the Recession," a static installation of the latest art and indie fashion from the Bay Area.

Exhibition Project Assistant - Part Time - Asian Art Museum

Exhibition Project Assistant
Temporary position: November 16, 2009-February 19, 2010
Part-time, 16-20 hours per week

The Asian Art Museum offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual, with strong administrative and language skills, to assist with the organization of a major exhibition Shanghai, scheduled to open in February 2010.

The Project Assistant will provide translation and administrative support to the Chinese Art department and the Museum Services department in the planning of this exhibition. The nature of the work requires flexibility, resourcefulness, and initiative in addition to excellent interpersonal, Chinese language, and organizational skills. The position may require evening and weekend work to help host dignitaries and couriers.

The incumbent will:

Translate text panels, press releases, and marketing copy, and create summaries of the exhibition labels in Chinese. Coordinate travel, logistics, and activities for Chinese dignitaries and couriers coming for the exhibition. Help arrange and facilitate their activities while in San Francisco. Translate (into Chinese and/or English) written and oral communication between the Asian Art Museum and museums and companies in China. Documents will relate to travel planning, exhibition content and organization, and general administration. Provide interpretation for Chinese-speaking guests, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications, B.A. Degree in Asian Art History, East Asian Studies, or related field. At least one year of experience working in an office environment providing administrative support; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Excellent administrative skills; extremely organized and accurate. Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office; familiarity with Chinese Star (Chinese word processing program).

Analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills; strong written and oral English communication skills.

Ability to read, write, and speak Mandarin Chinese; to give summary translations and more detailed word-by-word translations when necessary. Knowledge of art history terms in both languages is strongly preferred. Note: simultaneous interpretation is NOT required. Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment; extremely reliable and dependable. Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and representatives of other institutions; ability to welcome and engage guests of the museum. Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks; flexible and resourceful.
